From August 19, 2022, the international cycling elite will be pedaling again in the Tour of Spain when the Vuelta a España 2022 starts. Until September 11, 21 stages with a total distance of 3,280.5 kilometers are on the program for the cycling pros, which the athletes will take from the starting point in Utrecht in the Netherlands over six flat stages, five hilly stages and seven high mountain stages as well as team and individual time trials to the finish in Madrid. Belgian professional cyclist Remco Evenepoel has won the Tour of Spain for the first time in his career. The 22-year-old completed the overall victory on the final 21st stage in Spain’s capital Madrid on Sunday.
Evenepoel beat Enric Mas from Spain with a lead of 2:02 minutes. His 19-year-old compatriot Juan Ayuso finished third, 4:57 minutes behind. Evenepoel is the first Belgian in 44 years to win one of the three grand tours.
The victory of the day was secured after 96.7 kilometers in the sprint by the Colombian Juan Sebastián Molano in front of the former Danish world champion Mads Pedersen. Pascal Ackermann from the Palatinate, for whom the day’s winner Molano was actually supposed to start the sprint, finished third in the day’s classification and ended the 77th Tour of Spain without a stage win.

Belgium’s young cycling star Remco Evenepoel is facing the greatest success of his career so far at the Vuelta. The 22-year-old defended the overall leader’s red jersey on Saturday on the 20th and penultimate stage of the 77th Tour of Spain. Before the final day, Eveneoel is 2:05 minutes ahead of his closest pursuer Enric Mas from Spain and 5:08 minutes ahead of his compatriot Juan Ayuso.
Evenepoel easily fended off all of Mas’s attacks on the difficult mountain stage over 181 kilometers from Moralzarzal to Puerto de Navacerrada and finished sixth in the stage. After crossing the finish line, the young Belgian shed tears of joy. Richard Carapaz from Ecuador got the day’s victory. The Olympic champion from Tokyo thus secured the jersey of the best climber in the Vuelta ahead of time.
The final leg of the Tour of Spain on Sunday covers 97 kilometers from Las Rozas to the capital Madrid.

The Dane Mads Pedersen has celebrated his third stage win in the Tour of Spain. The former world champion from the Trek-Segafredo team thus further extended his lead in the points classification. After a good 138 kilometers around Talavera de la Reina, Pedersen could not be defeated in a sprint in a large head group. The best German on the 19th stage on Friday was Jonas Koch from the Bora-hansgrohe team in sixth place.
Belgian Remco Evenepoel finished in the first group and came one step closer to overall victory. The 22-year-old defended the overall leader’s red jersey and is 2:07 ahead of Spaniard Enric Mas and 5:14 ahead of his compatriot Juan Ayuso Pesquera.
The mountainous 20th stage of the day leads over 181 kilometers from Moralzarzal to Puerto de Navacerrada this Saturday. The Vuelta ends in Madrid on Sunday.
